I can remember the day I lost my innocence as a moviegoer. It happened thirty-five years ago when Bruce Dern murdered John Wayne in The Cowboys.

Up until that time, I had never seen the Duke get shot and killed. My world was shaken, but I remember feeling strangely invigorated, as well.

I got the same chills when I saw 3:10 to Yuma, now on DVD, a remake of a 1957 film that starts off as a classic tale of good guys and bad guys, a traditional scenario that quickly clouds with treachery, temptation and greed.

A beleaguered rancher trying to save his family and his livelihood accepts the challenge of escorting a violent criminal to the prison train in exchange for a generous fee. The bond these two men form during this arduous journey makes 3:10 to Yuma a must-see for anyone who loves Westerns, but the film’s rampant violence and rough language warrant a word of warning.
