There’s so much to like about American Gangster, now on DVD, I’m not sure where to start. It stars Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe and it’s directed by the talented and prolific Ridley Scott.

The incredible “based on actual events” script introduces us to a Harlem drug kingpin who, back in the seventies, showed the mafia a thing or two about making money.

It has good guys, bad guys, good guys who are really bad guys, and bad guys that love their mom. In short, American Gangster is a fascinating, engrossing crime drama that movie lovers are going to find very appealing. If they don’t mind its 2 ½ hour length, and if they can handle the violence.

You’ll love, hate, and respect both Washington’s suave thug and Crowe’s tough-as-nails and honest-as-the-day-is-long cop, but American Gangster’s real strength is its amazing story of crime, corruption and capitalism.
