BECAUSE I SAID SO
Rated PG-13
Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore
Brian’s Rating
Of all of Hollywood’s family
stereotypes, I find the meddlesome mother to be the most repellant. And
this week in this category, knocking off the reigning champion Jane Fonda’s
portrayal in Monster-in-Law, we have Diane Keaton in Because I Said So.
As
the divorced and abandoned mother of three grown daughters, Keaton’s
character has all of the necessary baggage required to be the controlling
interfering mother the script calls for.
Concerned that her youngest will
end up alone--or worse, choose a man that her mother doesn’t approve of--mom
devotes herself to finding a suitable suitor.
In the process she becomes a
sneaky, deceitful Harpy that you can’t help but hate. You know things will
eventually work out, but until then, you’ve got to put up with this maternal
psychopath and some surprisingly frank dialogue that goes well beyond
innuendo.
Because I Said So, made my flesh crawl.
