As 2007 drew to a close, the undisputed champion of my cinematic affection was a debauched congressman from Lufkin, Texas named Charlie Wilson.

If we believe what we are told in Charlie Wilson’s War, now on DVD, a no-name politician, at the prodding of a Texas socialite, helped the Afghan rebels drive the Soviets out of their country, in effect ending the Cold War. That’s a pretty outrageous claim, but the facts seem to back it up, and three incredible performances by Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip Seymour Hoffman make Charlie Wilson’s War an exceptional DVD selection.

With due respect to Ratatouille, this film was the single most enjoyable movie-watching experience I’ve had in a long time.

I’ll warn you about the nudity, the language, the alcohol, and the drugs, but I’ll still give Charlie Wilson’s War a great recommendation.
