Brian’s Rating
When it comes to movies filled with singing and dancing,
either you like musicals, or you don’t.
My girlfriend Cupcake doesn’t much like musicals, but I on the other hand
love them and recall with great passion the recent achievements of films
like Chicago and Moulin Rouge, at the same time ignoring the
disaster that was the second version of The Producers.
Now, we welcome Dreamgirls to DVD, the film adaptation of the
successful Broadway musical that manages to capture the passion and social
relevance of the Motown story, while serving up a handful of absolutely
thrilling musical performances.
Beyonce Knowles is impressive. Jamie Foxx and Danny Glover are perfectly
cast. Eddie Murphy should have won an Oscar. And newcomer Jennifer Hudson
did take home a little gold statuette.
Dreamgirls will translate well to all audiences, regardless of
ethnicities, provided that they like musicals. ‘Cause folks, there’s a whole
bunch of singing in Dreamgirls.
