A Disney film is usually a pretty safe bet for lighthearted fun that adults and children both can enjoy. That’s certainly the case with the Oscar-nominated Enchanted, now on DVD, a film that uses a combination of animation and live action to create its magic.

With a new twist on the familiar “fish out of water” scenario, fairy-tale characters fall from the pages of a storybook onto twenty-first-century Times Square where they must face the hazards of Manhattan.

The talented Amy Adams plays the damsel in distress while Patrick Dempsey plays her reluctant rescuer. Along the way we meet an evil queen, a dashing prince, and a flatulent chipmunk, but the story keeps up a steady pace while taking us through some fairly familiar territory.

Be advised that there is a preponderance of singing and dancing—and a couple of scenes involving a diabolical old woman and a fiery dragon that have the capacity to scare the young ones. But on the whole, pretty enchanting stuff.
