As a general rule, movies about
World War II, make strong patriotic statements and leave the audience
feeling pretty good about America’s involvement in that global undertaking.
Flags Of Our Fathers, now on DVD, is careful to point out the incredible
sacrifices made by American servicemen and their families during this
conflict, but the film does suggest that the American public was kind of
bamboozled by the US government’s version of the events which surrounded the
planting of the American flag on Iwo Jima. The film is respectful of the
American GI, and pays great tribute to the men who saved countless lives by
giving their own, but some people are going to be a little uncomfortable
with this account of how the war bonds sales machine took advantage of the
situation. But for a real cinematic treat, rent this one for home viewing
and then go see Letters from Iwo Jima in a theatre.
