Brian’s Rating
I’m drawing a blank. I’m looking for
a culinary analogy about eating something that tastes good but that doesn’t
provide enough real sustenance to satisfy you. It’s tasty while you’re
eating it but when you’re done, it doesn’t fill you up and you’re still
hungry. Not like Chinese food. More like a fluffy dessert. That’s it. It’s
like expecting a meal…and just getting dessert.
That’s what you get with Music and Lyrics, now on DVD, starring Drew
Barrymore and Hugh Grant. A big fluffy dessert.
The story…about a flash-in-the-pan pop star from the 80’s who teams up with
a beginning lyricist in an effort to restart his career…is actually pretty
clever.
And there’s plenty of chemistry between Grant and Barrymore. But there’s way
too much of Hugh Grant singing and not enough of Drew’s signature, but
believable, cuteness. I had fun with Music and Lyrics, but I was
still hungry if you catch my drift.
