Brian’s Rating
When you see Samuel L. Jackson in movies like Resurrecting the Champ,
now on DVD, it’s easy to forgive him for lapses in judgment like The Man
and Black Snake Moan.
His performance as a down-and-out fighter who has been reduced to
homelessness is nothing short of remarkable and his efforts alone make this
film worthwhile.
But Resurrecting the Champ is not really a boxing movie. It’s a story
of family, and more specifically father-son relationships, with equal doses
of honor, duty, trust, and ethics thrown in just in case we don’t get the
sometimes heavy-handed message.
Josh Hartnett plays a newspaper journalist looking for his big break, while
trying to maintain a relationship with his young son during a separation
from his wife. When he stumbles upon Champ, he finds not only the big story
he’s been looking for, but also a new perspective on his own life.
It’s a lot for the audience to keep up with but Resurrecting the Champ
delivers a solid punch to the gut.
