Brian’s Rating
Judging from the audience’s response to a recent screening of Space
Chimps, it doesn’t take much to entertain first graders.
It would appear that substandard animation, an outdated story, and a few
mediocre sight gags are enough to keep them happy, which is a good thing
since that’s about all Space Chimps has to offer. When NASA is faced
with a mission too dangerous for humans, they revert to mid-20th century
tactics and send a team of chimpanzees into the outer depths of space.
Predictably, the simians are smarter than they appear to be and quicker than
you can say “Planet of the Apes”, they battle an alien tyrant, retrieve a
wayward space craft and save America’s space program.
There’s enough fun here for most kids so if you’re thinking that The Dark
Knight’s Joker is too intense for the young ones, Space Chimps is
a pretty safe bet. But I’d stick to the bargain matinee.
