Health 52 Info Tip

If you don’t remember how long it’s been since you replaced your make-up, you’re probably overdue.

Unlike food, make-up doesn’t carry an expiration date determined by government guidelines. Manufacturers determine shelf life for their own products. The general rule of thumb from consumer experts is that mascara should be replaced every three months. Other cream-based eye shadow and eyeliners, every six months.

No make-up should be kept, once opened, for more than a couple of years. Especially with your eyes, bacteria from old or dirty make-up can easily cause an irritation, or can lead to serious infection. To avoid bacteria contamination, keep eyeliners without covers in a sealed container. If mascara becomes dry, throw it out. Do not dilute your makeup with water and don’t use saliva as a moistener.
Sharing make-up increases the risk of contamination.

To play it safe do a complete make-up changeover twice a year at the start of the new year and again at the start of the summer season.
