Health 52 Info Tip: Dry Eye

If your eyes are itchy and irritated it may be Spring allergies, or it could be dry eye, a condition that occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough natural tears to stay comfortable.

Symptoms of dry eye include an itchy, scratchy or gritty feeling, a burning sensation, or irritation when you’re around smoke or wind. If your contact lenses become uncomfortable, it could be caused by dry eye.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology explains that our eyes naturally have a film of tears that lubricate the surface every time we blink. Dry eye can be a side effect of certain medications, or you may simply be prone to this condition. It affects women more often than men.

Some people find that using over-the-counter artificial teardrops is enough to maintain enough moisture for daily comfort. In severe cases, an ophthalmologist or optometrist can insert tiny plugs into the tear ducts to prevent some of the drainage. This procedure is known as punctual occlusion.

Simple ways to control the sensation of dry eyes is avoid excessive exposure to smoke, wind or hair dryers. If you wear contact lenses, keep them moist through proper care.
